Frequently Asked Questions
1. What are lactation cookies?
Lactation cookies are snacks typically made with ingredients believed to help maintain or increase breast milk production for breastfeeding mums. They offer a convenient and delicious way for breastfeeding mums to try to support or boost milk supply with natural ingredients – galactagogues – and provide additional calories, fats and fibre to assist with postpartum recovery.
2. What are galactagogues?
Galactagogues are natural substances that help promote lactation. These include foods such as oats, brewer’s years, flaxseed, coconut oil and almond butter.
3. Are lactation cookies effective?
While many mums find lactation cookies to be beneficial for their milk supply, the effectiveness of lactation cookies will vary and much of the evidence is anecdotal. If you are concerned about your lactation supply, we recommend speaking with a lactation consultant or medical practitioner.
4. Are lactation cookies safe?
Yes, lactation cookies are generally safe for most people. However, our lactation cookies contain common allergens such as dairy, eggs, gluten and nuts, as noted in the ingredient list for each product. Provided that you are not allergic or have dietary restrictions, to the ingredients in our cookies, they are safe to consume daily in moderate amounts.
Please note that some ingredients such as brewer’s yeast which all our cookies contain, may cause side effects or interact with medications. If you are on medication or unsure, it is best to check with your medical practitioner.
5. When should I eat lactation cookies to see results?
Our cookies can be consumed at any time. As every mum’s experience with lactation cookies can vary (see our answer to question 3 above), some mums report an increased milk supply in a couple of days of consuming the cookies. Results will vary between individuals. We recommend pairing consumption of lactation cookies with increased nursing or pumping and ensuring that you stay hydrated. If you are concerned about your supply, we recommend speaking with a lactation consultant or medical practitioner.
6. How many cookies should I eat in a day?
We recommend starting with 1 or 2 cookies per day to observe how your body (and milk supply) responds over the next couple of days. You can increase consumption up to 3 or 4 cookies – but just be aware of the impact increasing consumption may have on milk supply, among other things.
Lactation cookies also contain calorie-dense ingredients. Some ingredients such as brewer’s yeast and flaxseed can cause gas and bloating in some people. We recommend consulting your medical practitioner or a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

7. Are lactation cookies safe to consume if I'm pregnant?
Yes – provided you have checked for allergies and that they are compatible with any medications (see our answer to question 4 above). We recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before consuming if you are unsure.

8. Are your cookies halal?
Yes – our ingredients are 100% halal.

9. How should I store my cookies?
Our cookies are handmade and baked within 1 to 2 days of receiving your order. We provide a care card with each of our cookies with instructions on how to best store the cookies to maintain freshness.
As all our cookies contain brewer’s yeast which can spoil over time, we recommend storing our cookies at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
For longer storage, you can refrigerate the cookies for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
You can freeze the lactation cookies for up to 3 months, provided they are sealed in a freezer bag or airtight container. If defrosting the cookies, we recommend leaving them to thaw at room temperature for 2-3 hours then warming them in the microwave for 30 seconds.

10. My partner has stolen my cookies! Can anyone eat them?
As annoying as this is (they need their own cookies!), non-lactating individuals can eat them too! They are just cookies with an additional nutritional boost for lactating mums – so your partner, kids and friends can consume them without issue. Best to keep your stash closely guarded!
